Big South Fork Points
of Interest

Welcome to the Big South Fork National Recreation
Area!!!

Congress established the Big South Fork National River
and Recreation Area in 1974 to provide recreational
opportunities and to preserve its resources. It belongs
to the American people and is administered by the
National Park Service to both protect those resources
and to provide for an array of healthful outdoor
recreational activities. Your first stop should be at
one of the park visitor centers where informed park
personnel will help you get the most of your
visit.

The Big South Fork is the gateway to the natural wonders
of the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area.
Once heavily worked for its abundant natural resources,
the Big South Fork's fantastic natural geological
formations are again blanketed by lush vegetation. This
vast wilderness stretching into Tennessee for a total of
113,000 acres is an outdoor lover's paradise, with a
variety of recreational opportunities.
Some of Big South Fork Park's most outstanding sites
that you would want to see are the Twin Arches, Yahoo
Falls, the Chimneys on Station Camp Road, East Rim
Overlook, and Charit Creek Lodge.

Easily accessible overlooks offer panoramic views of the
river gorge, like the East Rim overlook in Tennessee and
the Devils Jump and Blue Heron overlooks in Kentucky.
Other viewpoints require driving backroads, such as
Honey Creek and Dick Gap overlooks.
The terrain is the rugged, mountainous forestland of the
Cumberland Plateau. It is deeply gorge carved by the Big
South Fork of the Cumberland River. The Big South Fork
River is rated one of the 10 best whitewater rivers in
the U.S.

There are 150 miles of marked hiking trails in the Big
South Fork. Numerous overlooks offer breathtaking views
of the rocky gorge and cascading river.
The Twin Arches are located in the Big South Fork where
two massive stone arches stand end to end. The North
Arch possesses a span of 93 feet and a clearance of 51
feet. The South Arch has 135 feet of rock spanning a
clearance of 70 feet. Numerous smaller arches dot the
recreation area which, when the tally is complete, may
turn out to possess more natural arches than anywhere
else in the eastern United States.

The Blue Heron area of Big South Fork has overlooks of
the Devils Jump. It is also the site of the Blue Heron
Mining Community, the coal mining town that flourished
here in the 1930s and '40s. Paths lead through the
community, where you can hear the actual voices of
housewives, shopkeepers and others discuss their lives
at Blue Heron.
Big South Fork Park offers many hiking trails such as
the John Litton Farm Trail, Fall Branch Trail, Angel
Falls Overlook, Grand Loop, Jack's Ridge Trail, Laurel
Fork Creek Trail, Station Camp Creek Trail, John Muir
Trail, John Litton Farm Trail, Honey Creek Overlook,
Leatherwood Ford.
While at the Big South Fork see if you can find the face in the rock.
