They thrived on its abundant wildlife, natural rock shelters, and cool clear mountain water. Many Cherokee Indian artifacts were left behind and are protected by the park service. As you travel through Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, you will see many of the bluffs the Indians lived under, and it is easy to imagine times long past. The Big South Fork National River and Recreation area is renowned for its excellent horseback riding, with miles and miles of mountainous trails offering breathtaking beauty, abundant wildlife, mountain streams, and beautiful rock formations.
The Big South Fork River flows through the park and offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, white water rafting, and kayaking*. There are many hiking trails leading to some of the most beautiful natural rock formations, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. Biking paths are available for all experienced level bikers. * Some areas for white water rafting and kayaking may require more extensive experience.
