In the Big South Fork, while hiking or horseback riding you will find many rock shelters (Indian Bluffs), which the Cherokee Indians and other native American tribes from as far back as 10,000 B.C., used for shelter and living quarters. While viewing these shelters you will notice the ceilings are blackened by thousands of fires created by these native Americans. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area offers some of the finest mountain horse back riding trails (180 miles of trails), a total of 150 miles of hiking trails, and over 80 miles of river for white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area was established by Congress in 1974. The park is located in five counties : Scott, Fentress, and Morgan Counties in Tennessee and McCreary and Wayne Counties in Kentucky. The Big South Fork River collects its water from a watershed area (drainage area) of 1,582 square miles. © 2002 BigSouthForkInfo.com - All rights reserved |
